Most people feel nothing unusual until around the time their period is due, and the earliest pregnancy symptoms look a lot like PMS. Some people notice tender breasts, mild cramps, tiredness or light spotting about a week to ten days after ovulation, but none of these are proof. A missed period is the most reliable early sign, and a pregnancy test (see when to take a pregnancy test) is the only way to know for sure.
Why Symptoms Start So Early
Early symptoms are driven by rising hormones, especially progesterone and hCG (the pregnancy hormone), after the fertilised egg implants in the uterus. Implantation usually happens about 6 to 12 days after ovulation, and your body only starts making hCG once it has happened. That is why almost nothing can be felt in the first few days after conception.
Pregnancy is also counted from the first day of your last period, so “week 1” and “week 2” fall before conception. Learn how weeks are counted with the gestational age calculator.
Early Pregnancy Symptoms Timeline: Day by Day After Ovulation
Timing varies from person to person, so treat this as a rough guide rather than a schedule.
| When | What may happen |
|---|---|
| Days 1–5 after ovulation | No pregnancy symptoms yet. Any changes are usually normal luteal-phase (PMS-type) effects of progesterone. |
| About 6–12 days after ovulation | Light spotting or mild cramping around implantation, though not everyone has it. See implantation bleeding vs. period. |
| Around 7–10 days after ovulation | Breast tenderness or fullness, mild bloating, extra tiredness. Trace hCG may start to be detectable, but it is usually too low for most home tests. |
| Around your missed period (11–14 days after ovulation) | A missed period, nausea with or without vomiting, frequent urination, food aversions or cravings. |
| Weeks 5–6 of pregnancy | Fatigue, mood swings, a metallic taste, a heightened sense of smell. |
For symptoms once pregnancy is confirmed, see early pregnancy signs after implantation and pregnancy symptoms by week.
The Most Common Early Signs of Pregnancy
- Missed period. The classic sign if your cycles are regular.
- Tender, swollen breasts. Often stronger than usual PMS, and the areolas may darken.
- Nausea. “Morning sickness” can strike at any time of day; see morning sickness relief.
- Fatigue. Progesterone makes you sleepy. Our pregnancy fatigue guide explains what helps.
- Frequent urination. Caused by rising blood volume and hormone changes.
- Mild cramps or light spotting. Usually minor, but see the warning signs below.
- Other possible signs. Food cravings or aversions, a metallic taste, bloating, headaches and mood swings.
Can You Have Pregnancy Symptoms Before a Missed Period?
Yes, but it is far from guaranteed. Many people have no symptoms at all before their period is due, and most do not notice implantation. Because progesterone rises after ovulation in every cycle, whether or not you conceive, symptoms in the days before your period cannot tell you if you are pregnant.
Pregnancy Symptoms vs. PMS
Breast tenderness, bloating, mood changes and cramps appear in both. Nausea, a metallic taste and a missed period lean towards pregnancy, while symptoms that fade as bleeding starts point to PMS.
| Symptom | Early pregnancy | PMS |
|---|---|---|
| Breast tenderness | Often persists, may feel fuller; areolas may darken | Usually eases when your period starts |
| Cramps | Mild, may come with light pink or brown spotting | Often builds up to a full period |
| Bleeding | Light spotting for hours to a few days, no pad needed | A steady flow of bright or dark red blood |
| Nausea | Common from about week 4–6 | Uncommon |
| Fatigue | Often marked and persistent | Mild and short-lived |
| Period | Does not arrive | Arrives on time |

Other Reasons for a Late Period or Similar Symptoms
A late period does not always mean pregnancy. Hormonal birth control, stress, big changes in weight or exercise, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), some medications and irregular cycles can all delay a period or cause pregnancy-like symptoms. If your test is negative and your period stays away, speak to your doctor.
When to Take a Pregnancy Test
Some tests can pick up trace hCG a few days before a missed period, but testing that early often gives a false negative because levels are still low. For the most reliable result, wait until the first day of your missed period and use first-morning urine, which is the most concentrated. If you test early and it is negative, repeat in a few days. See our full guide on when to take a pregnancy test.
Could I Be Pregnant? What to Do Next
- Wait until the first day of your missed period to test, using first-morning urine.
- If positive, work out your due date with the due date calculator.
- Book a prenatal appointment and ask about folic acid.
When to Get Urgent Help
Seek urgent care for severe or one-sided abdominal pain, heavy bleeding (soaking a pad an hour), dizziness or fainting, or shoulder-tip pain, especially with a positive test, as these can signal an ectopic pregnancy or another emergency.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the first signs of pregnancy before a missed period?
The earliest signs can include light spotting or mild cramps, breast tenderness, bloating and tiredness. They overlap heavily with PMS, so a pregnancy test on or after the first day of your missed period is more informative than symptoms.
Can you feel pregnant 1 week after conception?
Some people notice mild changes, but most feel nothing. Implantation usually happens 6 to 12 days after ovulation, so symptoms are not reliable this early.
Are cramps without bleeding a sign of pregnancy?
They can be, but they are also common before a normal period. A test on the day of a missed period is more informative.
Is it possible to be pregnant with no symptoms?
Yes. Many healthy pregnancies have few or no symptoms in the first weeks.
When do pregnancy symptoms usually start?
Often around 4 to 6 weeks of pregnancy, near or just after a missed period.
How early can a pregnancy test show positive?
Some sensitive tests can detect trace hCG a few days before a missed period, but results are most reliable from the first day of your missed period. A negative result before then does not rule out pregnancy.
